Fed: Democrats to oppose Howard's tax cuts

The Australian Democrats have undermined Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD's pre-election
strategy by promising to use their Senate numbers to scuttle further tax cuts.

Democrats leader NATASHA STOTT DESPOJA says if her party retains the balance of power
after the election, it will block tax cuts for high income earners until the new government
addresses poverty.

Senator STOTT DESPOJA says rather than considering tax cuts, the government should
look at measures to improve the lives of more than one million Australians who lived below
the poverty line.

She also says the government should move towards a single welfare payment equal to
the level of the aged pension.
