CANBERRA, Aug 12 AAP - Main stories in today's 0800 (AEST) edition of the ABC's AM program:

* Coalitions republicans have met to plot their strategy for the November referendum. The
meeting was chaired by Finance Minister John Fahey and was attended by Treasurer Peter
Costello. Between 26 and 30 MPs were present.

* Aboriginal leaders are not happy with the compromise preamble that the Democrats and the
Prime Minster John Howard have agreed upon. Interview with former reconciliation council chair
Patrick Dodson.

* In Darwin today lawyers for the prosecution will begin examining an Aboriginal woman in a
landmark stolen generation case.

* The conviction of Macquarie Bank executive Simon Hannes for insider trading has sparked
debate as to how widespread the practice is. The Australian Securities And Investment
Commission says that it is rare but industry insiders and legal academics say that it is more
common than most people realise.

* A National Breast Cancer centre study has shown the number of Australian women dying of
breast cancer is declining. Interview with National Breast Cancer centre director Professor
Sally Redman.

* Searchers are puzzled over the where abouts of four men missing in the Snowy Mountains
since Monday night. The men are experienced and are carrying mobile phones and navigation
equipment. There are concerns that the men may have been buried by a mini avalanche.

* Tension between Pakistan and India continues after India shot down a Pakistani plane.
Pakistan has fired on an Indian fighter jets that were carrying journalists as well as
soldiers.

* West Australian Premier Richard Court says the Senate inquiry into hospital funding will
not fill the role of an independent inquiry which states and territories wanted. Interview
with Mr Court.

* The Liberal Party has dumped longstanding MP David Perrin for preselection. An opponent
of Victorian Premier Jeff Kennett, he was a victim of an ethnic branch stacking war.

* Rockhampton's City Council has auctioned replica bull testicles for charity.
